Thoughts - According to Rob Bauer, the top NATO military official in Brussels, Belgian politicians urgently need to ‘wake up’. The whole of society needs to, because the Russian threat is real. Therefore, ‘much more than 2 per cent of GDP’ must go to defence.

Lieutenant Admiral Rob Bauer will pass the baton as chairman of the NATO Military Committee next week. Before his departure, the highest military officer at NATO made it clear in Brussels what challenges the military alliance and Belgium are facing. The Dutchman did not mince his words. Central to his plea is the idea that not only the military and politics, but the whole of society must think differently and prepare for the unexpected, including a new, major war.
